The product of the year has to be something special. In fact, it should pass three main criteria:

  • It should deliver on its promises.
  • It should improve workflows for filmmakers around the world, and
  • It should shake up the industry and spur competition.
  •
As far as I’m concerned, the product that really impressed me in 2015 is not even a filmmaking product, but just a humble LED light:

  • Yuji main site
  • The set I bought (VTC 5600K)
  • Link to 100 LED chips for DIY (You get more color temperatures here)
  • DIY Perks video
  •

    Comparison with other fixtures

I compared the light to three other fixtures (No diffusion on any light):

  • Yongnuo YN900, which I reviewed earlier.
  • A tungsten 200W lamp dimmed down.
  • A Philips 10W LED bulb
  •
All were white balanced accurately using a grey card. No color corrections were done. I overexposed the Yongnuo a bit by mistake.

The Yuji light is with its diffusion (I shattered it later to look inside).

Here are the results (click to enlarge):

    What do you think?

Tungsten still has the most natural color and skin tone, but the Yuji isn’t bad at all. It’s a ‘look’ that’s for sure, but not accurate skin tone.

The Yongnuo and Philips both have green casts that are just ugly to look at.

Features of the Yuji LED lighting VTC series 5600K LED bulb

  • 14 Watts
  • Typical CRI: 97-98, minimum CRI: 95
  • Voltage: 100-250V
  • Fully dimmable
  • Output: 725 lumens at an efficacy of 52 lumens per watt.
  • 50,000 hours life
  • 5 year warranty
  • Edison socket (E26 and E27)
  • f/4 @ ISO 800 @ 3 feet (1/50th shutter) with the diffusion (non-removable)
  • f/5 @ ISO 800 @ 3 feet (1/50th shutter) – I shattered the diffusion!
  • f/10 with four bulbs, and about f/5.6 with a softbox. Not bad for only a power draw of 56 Watts.
  • Comes in two versions, 3200K and 5600K. I reviewed (and prefer) the 5600K version.
  •

    How it can be improved

  • Increase luminous efficacy, of course.
  • Support for other sockets.
  • Higher wattage lights. The Impact holder can hold 50W per socket, imagine the possibilities!
  • Battery operation.
  • Bi-color (which is the new industry term for multi-color).
  • Better heat management (The rear still gets hot)
  • Please add video to your list of applications for high CRI, Yuji!.
  •
In other words, give me an Arri L7-C for $500, or a Dedolight DLED for $200!

    Final word

I mean it when I say no other product impressed and inspired me so much as the Yuji VTC LED line, especially the 5600K daylight version.

I’m not saying it is perfect, and there’s lots of room for improvement. But I’m pretty sure there are designers, engineers and film enthusiasts out there right now designing better LED fixtures for the rest of us. Encourage them!
